The image consists of an interpretation of the titular Virgin of Sorrows by the Brotherhood organizing the exhibition, with a more pictorial imprint that could recall Murillo’s iconography of Our Lady of Sorrows.<\/p> \n \n

The Virgin looks to heaven with a pained expression, while her right hand holds a rope that alludes to the image of Christ the Captive, which the Corporation venerates as its patron saint. Her left hand is held to her heart with heartbreaking tension, recalling Simeon’s prophecy: “A sword will pierce your heart.”<\/p> \n \n

From under the hand, a weeping angel appears, looking down at the Blessed Virgin. He represents every Christian who seeks refuge in the Mother of God.<\/p> \n \n

The wooden pedestal is gilded with 23.5 karat fine gold. The cartouches are polychrome tempera with inscriptions of the Litany of Sorrows in Latin.<\/p> \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
