This is a life-size sculpture carved in cedar wood, inspired by Our Father Jesus of Nazareth of Medinaceli, Madrid, destined for the Salamanca town of Encinasola de los Comendadores.
Despite the strong inspiration from the aforementioned Christ, I have allowed myself certain artistic liberties that make it different from the original work; however, upon viewing it, it perfectly evokes the acclaimed Lord of Madrid.
The polychrome painting was done in oil with a matte finish, following the technique of the workshop to which the Madrid image is attributed, Juan de Mesa. The anatomy, subtly rendered, shows the wounds from the recent flagellation. The treatment of the blood stands out, giving the impression that the marks are bleeding at this very moment.
Similar to the Medinaceli of Madrid, he wears a natural hair wig, made by the workshop of the Jerez-based hairdresser Francis.
The crown of thorns is made of gold-plated metal, the work of the Hinojos goldsmith Juan Hernández. Photographs by Juan María Torres.
